Bonobo & Congo Biodiversity Initiative

The Bonobo & Congo Biodiversity Initiative (BCBI) studies and protects the bonobo in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to ensure the survival of this endangered great ape. The Salonga National Park, a World Heritage Site, is our primary conservation area. The BCBI team has recently completed an intensive four-year survey covering 2,600 square miles of dense rainforest, documenting the largest unfragmented bonobo population thus far described for the species. Beyond bonobos, the Salonga also offers a chance to rebuild a self-sustaining herd of forest elephants. In partnership with the Institut Congolais pour la Conservation de la Nature (ICCN) and a team of governmental and non-governmental organizations, BCBI brings the bonobo and the Salonga National Park to the forefront of great ape and biodiversity conservation.

A donation to the BCBI can help vital components of the program, such as:

●Surveys and Research: provide field equipment, fuel, medicines, food, and supplies for bonobo surveys.

●Guard Sponsorship: support the Salonga park guards at Watsi Kengo with food, patrol rations, medicines, boots, GPS units, compasses, and other supplies and equipment.

●Primary Schools and Adult Literacy: support teachers, and provide school and classroom supplies.
